Plant Forward Garden Design with Sean Hogan
The Garden is pleased to host Sean Hogan, the esteemed plantsman behind Cistus Nursery in Oregon and author of the book "Flora: A Gardener's Encyclopedia." Sean has been involved in many private and public gardens in the Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest. He will share highlights from his decades-long career in horticultural adventures, highlighting plants to know and love, climate-forward garden design, the importance of thriving horticulture communities, and botanical collections such as UCBG.
About the speaker: Sean Hogan is an acclaimed plantsman, collector, and designer specializing in a range of flora, from native plants of the west coast to plants from around the world. He is author of Flora: A Gardener’s Encyclopedia and Trees for All Seasons: Broadleaf Evergreens for Temperate Climates. He is owner of celebrated Portland, Oregon-based Cistus Design and Nursery. His work at public gardens include Curator of Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden and Director of Collections for Portland’s Hoyt Arboretum. From the mid-80s to the mid-90s, Hogan stewarded many UC Botanical Garden collections, including South Africa, Australasia, Desert of the Americas and California. He is currently on the horticultural advisory committee of Western Hills Garden in Occidental.
