This event is no longer on sale.

Friday January 28

10:00 AM  –  12:00 PM

As a compliment to this year's Plants Illustrated exhibit, Inside the Artists' Studios is a two-part series featuring the work of 4 botanical artists from the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists. Each session features two artists who will focus on their area of expertise, inviting the viewer virtually into their studio via Zoom for a 45-minute demonstration of their technique. There will also be opportunity for Q & A. Join us for one or both!

January 28, 10am-12pm

Amber Turner: Leaves in Winter - Conifers in Pen & Ink
Winter is the perfect time to take a good look at conifers, the ancient ancestors of the plant world. We will talk about the botany of conifers using several species that have needle-like or scale-like leaves in various arrangements, like bundles and whorls. Demonstration includes:

  • Making herbarium specimens and show their uses in the studio.
  • The techniques of mark making with pen and ink with additional washes; corrections and white ink will be demonstrated.
  • Drawing two examples of our local natives: Coast redwood and Bishop pine

Maria Cecilia (Cissy) Freeman: Light on Leaves
In this watercolor workshop we will look at light touching leaves at different angles, and how this affects our painting. Color and shading depend on how light touches leaf edges, veins and surface texture. These ideas will be demonstrated in watercolor, but they apply in any media.
