Plein AiR with Forest Stearns

Plein AiR Patrol with Forest Stearns

The Garden is thrilled to introduce artist Forest Stearns of DRAWEVERYWHERE Studios who is hosting an interactive Artist in Residency (AiR) project, Plein AiR Patrol, at the Garden. Once a month, Forest will serve as host for a meet-up of artists at any level (beginners to experienced) to engage in a regular practice of outdoor drawing/painting inspired by the diverse settings of the UC Botanical Garden. Meet-ups started in February and are on-going, culminating in a show of Forest's work, as well as participants, to be scheduled. Forest will choose a Friday date to be posted at least one month in advance, with the Garden locale to be revealed during check-in.

During the meet-up you can shadow Forest in action and ask questions, discover other artists' style and approach, work on your own piece, share in practice, and see the Garden in new ways. All that is required is a UCBG membership and your desire to explore plein air art-making with others. Online registration for each meet-up is free and enabled when you Sign in for membership verification. An email will be sent before the meet-up and will include suggested materials to bring if you are new to this art form.

Slow Scent® Natural Perfumery Workshop

Explore the art of natural perfumery at the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley with Jessica Mennella of FLWR Napa Valley. Natural perfumery, which is steeped in the history and beauty of botanical materials, has been revered throughout the ages as a portal to our emotions, desires, and dreams. Perfume has held a place in rituals, from the ceremonial to the intimate experiences of daily life.

In this class, you will learn the foundation and the art of natural perfumery, based on the Slow Scent® method of perfumery developed by world-renowned perfumer, Mandy Aftel of Aftelier Perfumes and the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents, and taught by Jessica Mennella. Used worldwide, this process allows participants to create their own, unique perfume formula from a botanical perfumer’s organ of 18 exquisite absolutes and essential oils while learning basic blending techniques of natural perfumery. Be transported through scent as you create in the gardens, and then take this experience home through your own signature perfume.

Program is free, donations welcome, registration required for Zoom link. If you cannot make the live presentation, register to receive the recording for limited-time viewing.

NOTE: All participants are required to have and sign into their own Zoom account prior to joining meetings hosted by UC Berkeley. If you don't already have a Zoom account you can sign up for free here.
