Participants will learn about the history of incense use and the ethnobotany of selected tree resins. We will attune our senses with a brief demonstration of the Japanese incense ceremony (Koh-do) and “listen” to incense–by heating and passing around small chips of resinous heartwood from Aquilaria trees and trying to detect their aromatic nuances. Various samples of incense and ingredients used across globe will provide further background and inspiration for participants to create their own resinous incense to take home using wet and dry ingredients.
Ethnobotanist and Cal alum Krisa Fredrickson’s lifelong interest in plant/people interactions has led her explore aromatic woods and resins, textiles, traditional dyes and pigments along with regional pharmacopeia. Krisa currently lives in Oakland and works as a curatorial assistant at the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Cancellation Policy: Notification two weeks prior to program receives full refund; less than two weeks receives a one-time credit toward another Garden program to be used within 90 days; less than 48 hours from program start, no refunds or credit will be given for cancellations or absences.
In the event that the Garden has to cancel a program you will be offered a full refund or the option to transfer to another program.
